Sounds like the right place. This sounds like you may have an inadequate video card that doesn't have enough RAM which is highly unlikely unless you're using a very old video card. Therefore, I'd be looking to upgrade/update the video card's drivers (I don't know what you have so you'll have to ask that in another thread). If you're sure you have the best and most current drivers then you may want to adjust your driver settings to allow you to see all the resolutions that your card may support - not just the resolutions that your driver thinks your monitor is capable of. (I might be able to help there too if I knew what OS and card you had.) Of course, the simplest thing might be to just get a better monitor cable.
If you use VGA (which I don't recommend) and your VGA connection is only using 3 or 4 lines (connections) then it's almost a certainty that your card can't properly detect your monitor. This is almost always a problem when a KVM switch is used too.

But if you're using a DVI cable then you should be OK. HDMI is also usually acceptable and able to provide monitor info back to the card although you may have troubles with audio. So if you want to provide more info about your system maybe someone can help better. (Sorry if that's not much help.). I'm in the exact same boat. I also have the HP ZR2740w and it comes with a DP and DVI-D Dual Link cables.
I can get 2560x1440 using the DP cable with my UltraBook but I have been unable to get that resolution using DVI with any of my desktops. I've tried Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge based IGP's and a Radeon 7750. I've tried creating custom display profiles using the Intel drivers with no luck. Perhaps the motherboards are fake dual link ports and are only single link DVI. I can't imagine that the DL ports on a Radeon 7750 are incapable of 2560x1440. The catalyst drivers don't allow creating custom resolutions but there seem to be some registry hacks and custom utilities out there to do it.
I've tried, but still no luck. My last remaining option is to find a mini DP to DP cable and use that on my Radeon 7750. Either that or go get another graphics card with a full size DP port.
So my 'answer' if you will is to forget about DVI and use DP. But this seems wrong and broken to me because why else would they bother putting DVI and DP ports and provide cables with this monitor? Surely there must be some alignment of the stars where DVI actually works.
I'll keep trying and update my answer if I ever find it. Resolutions above 'HD' (1920x1080 or 1920x1200) require you use a 'Dual Link' DVI cable. If the cable you had was single link (google those terms to find out how to ID the cable) then it will limit the resolution, or look like hell. You need to (as you did) use a displayport cable if your monitor supports that, or get a Dual Link DVI cable (would be surprised if the monitor did not come with one) Note also that if you are connecting to something like a Mac, using their mini-display port or thunderbolt connector, that most of the cheap passive mini display port to DVI adaptors are Single Link, and thus will not work at the higher resolutions. You can get mini-dp to DualLink DVI adaptors, but they are not cheap, ones from places like Monoprice.com run for around $50, and the official Apple one is likely close to double that. If the monitor supports displayport, just get a mini to regular DP cable, it will be a lot cheaper. The only reason to go with a mini-DP to DualLinkDVI adaptor would be if the monitor does not have displayport, or you are doing something like feeding a DVI KVM (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) switch to serve two systems with a single display.

As mentioned in posts #1423 and 1429, and covered very well in post #1, Problem 6: My GA-H170N-WIFI would not allow my nVidia GTX 750 Ti graphics card to run on the nVidia Web Driver 367.15.10.15f03 under Mac OS 10.12.1. The fix for me was to install the 'EmuVariableUefi-64' driver from Clover Configurator's 'Install Drivers' left-hand column. Then the card got full acceleration (51.3 frames/second on 'Heaven' benchmark). You can also install it during an installation of Clover, but it was easier for me just to open Clover Configurator and add that driver into the EFI (targeted in the upper right corner of CC's window). Not that I understand what 'no native support of NVRAM' even means!

I made a silly mistake from the start by not removing my USB Boot Flash Drive (reason why I kept on seeing at boot my config.plist not being updated). After reading this, I removed the USB drive after I added the 'EmuVariableUefi-64' driver as noted in post #1, the NVidia drivers were recognized by the OS! Not sure if the installation guide should mention that to help others. Thanks so much again, you guys rock! I'm very excited! Now I just have to find the solution for the audio driver on that GA-Z170X Gaming 7 board.

Click to expand. I'd like to add another success for the EmuVariableUefi-64 driver fix. I have a Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Designare that was working great with the Nvidia drivers for a GTX 970 under 10.12.1 when I had the original F2 firmware. I upgraded the firmware (bios) on the motherboard to the latest F20 version (which enabled XMP memory overclocking for me) and to my surprise the Nvidia drivers stopped being selected (problem #6). I found this thread and added the EmuVariableUefi-64 fix and it solved the problem. I too don't fully understand the NVRAM issue, but apparently it can change with bios upgrade on the gigabyte motherboards. Thanks for the help!
I don't think I can add much to the steps that have already been described, but I can give you more details on my working setup. I have a EVGA GTX970 in a Gigabyte Z170X-Designare with i7 6700k. The Nvidia web driver is 367.15.10.15f03 under Sierra 10.12.1. The Nvidia web driver was working under BIOS F2, by using board-id Mac-27ADBB7B4CEE8E61 even though I have the system definition set to iMac 17,1.
Once I updated to the latest BIOS F21, I experienced the symptoms of Problem #6 - can't switch out of OS X Default Graphics Driver. By simply installing the EmuVariableUefi-64 driver with the latest clover update to my boot EFI, I was able to select the NVIDIA Graphics Driver, reboot, and has been working great ever since. Perhaps you can notice a difference in your setup that is causing you the problem?
